Where to stay: Lord Balfour in South Beach

Dynamic design melds with modern furnishings and a little bit of British cheekiness at Lord Balfour, a boutique hotel located in what locals call SoFi, or South of Fifth. The exterior of the building reflects an Art Deco style, an architectural design that Miami Beach is famous for — in fact, the Art Deco District is the youngest to ever receive a designation by the National Register of Historic Places.

Lord Balfour sits on the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Ocean Drive and is just a short walk to the Atlantic Ocean where colorful lifeguard stands dot the shoreline. One of South Beach’s trendiest neighborhoods, SoFi starts at Fifth Avenue and runs south all the way to South Pointe Park, which overlooks PortMiami. Famous for it’s luxury condo towers and some of Miami’s most well-known restaurants, the area is farther away from the tourist-packed section of Miami Beach.

Inside the lobby, unique artistic elements are found around every corner. There’s a full bar that serves happy hour specials each afternoon and hosts a free continental breakfast spread in the mornings. A funky wall of hands holding mirrors line the right side of the bar. A set of stairs, as well as an elevator, leads to the hotel’s rooms, where you’ll find upscale furnishings, comfy beds with bright yellow headboards and interesting art work showcasing a British glam design theme. The hotel is planning an expansion that will include construction of a new restaurant, more rooms and a pool.

Where to Dine: A few blocks away, Red, The Steakhouse is an excellent fine-dining option, with an extensive wine list and high quality steaks. Chef Peter Vauthy will dazzle you with an amazing burrata and tomato dish, delicious steak tartar, lobster mac and cheese that will melt in your mouth and prime cuts of steak that are cooked to perfection.
